Virechana is one of the Panchakarma procedure and often called as a 'Pitta detox'. Virechana is medicated purgation which is done to remove excess pitta out from body by certain medications followed by purgation. Virechana is usually done in Sharad rutu means mid September to mid November for better results but for people with excess pitta dushti this procedure can be done any time in a year. Virechana takes duration of 8 to 10 days to complete. Initially some medicines are given for dipan pachana then medicated ghee as administered orally in increasing dose for internal snehapana. Then external snehan swedan is done with medicated oil followed by steam (swedana) . Medicines for purgation is given on last day which causes loose motions for 10 to 20 times.
